How I approach large leg pieces and leg sleeves

A leg is not a flat panel. It is a cylinder that changes width four times and bends in the middle, so a design that looks perfect from the front can disappear from the side.

I plan for every viewing angle

I map where the design wraps and where it breaks. There should always be something worth looking at from the front, the outside, and the back, with no dead zone where the piece just stops.

The knee sets the rhythm

The knee is the loudest point on a leg. I usually give it a strong anchor, often a mandala or a solid ornamental motif, and let the rest of the leg move around that decision.

Session order

  • Outline the major structure first so the whole leg reads as one piece
  • Build the thigh and calf in separate sittings
  • Save the most sensitive areas for when we both know your pace

Healing a leg

Legs swell more than most placements, especially in the heat. Elevate when you can, skip long days on your feet right after a session, and expect fresh line to look heavier than it will settle.

If you want to start a leg, tell me how far you want it to go eventually, even if we begin with one section.
