Bold black is the most honest work I do. There is nowhere to hide. The shape either reads or it does not.
I like blackwork because it holds up. Solid black and confident line still look like themselves in twenty years, which matters more to me than a piece that photographs well the week it is done.
What I consider when designing blackwork
Negative space is the design. Before I decide what goes black, I decide what stays skin, because that is what gives the piece its shape from a distance.
I also plan the edges carefully. A clean, intentional border is what separates bold blackwork from a heavy shape that just looks filled in.
If you already have work in the area, I look at how much black the surrounding skin can carry without flattening everything nearby.
Placement and body flow
Blackwork sits well on backs, outer legs, thighs, shoulders, and forearms where there is enough surface to let a strong shape sit whole.
On smaller areas I usually keep the black tighter and let line carry more of the work, so the piece does not swallow the limb.
Sessions and healing
Large areas of solid black take time and they take a toll on the skin, so I break them into sessions instead of pushing one area too far in a day.
Solid black can heal patchy in spots and sometimes needs a touch up pass. That is normal and I plan for it rather than treating it as a surprise.

- Does solid black hurt more?
- Large black areas are usually more of an endurance thing than a sharp pain thing. We take breaks and I pace the session with you.
- Can blackwork cover an old tattoo?
- Frequently yes. Send photos and I will tell you what is realistic. Some pieces need lightening first.
- Will heavy black fade in the Arizona sun?
- Any tattoo will soften with sun exposure. Sunscreen on healed work is the single best thing you can do for it here.
